Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Tuesday ruled out imposition of President’s rule in Andhra Pradesh saying the issue was not discussed in the Cabinet. However, Shinde expressed concern over the widespread agitation in the Seemandhra region against bifurcation of the State. “There is no plan under consideration to impose President’s rule in Andhra Pradesh. There was no such discussion in today’s Cabinet,” Shinde said.
However, sources said the option of President’s rule was discussed at length but considering the present crisis and experience of Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy in handling such agitations over the last two years, it was put on the backburner.
“There was a feeling that such a decision may aggravate the situation further in the Seemandhra region. The government doesn’t want to set its own house on fire,” the sources said.
“I would like to assure the people of Seemandhra that the government of India remains fully committed to address all their concerns, particularly with respect to safeguarding the interests of people living in Telangana,” Shinde said.
It is learnt that the Home Minister also discussed the power crisis in several parts of the State due to the strike by power sector employees and asked the State to hold a meeting with the stakeholders. Shinde said if the situation deteriorates further, the State government may impose Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).
